Acid reflux happens when the tube that you use to ingest food from the throat into the stomach is not capable of handling the acid. When it comes to mealtime make sure you eat small portions. This way you won't feel like having enormous meals that take a long to digest and will only make matters worse with your acid reflux. So don't even think about skipping meals because by the time you do eat, you will more than likely overeat making your acid reflux worse.

If you really feel the need for something in between meals then chewing gum will help. Besides taking your mind off food, it will increase the saliva and will help with any left over acid lingering in your digestive system. Just be careful to pick something without mint since it is known to make matters worse for a lot of people. Antacids also help just be mindful of how many you are taking.

One thing that people do not realize is that drinking water can be a great help with this condition. The water will dilute stomach acid and can reduce the feeling of heartburn. Probably one of the biggest contributors of acid reflux is when you have your final meal. This can be difficult depending on what hours you work and trying to figure out what time to go to bed. Many years ago, the majority of people were home by 6pm, but with different tours nowadays, this is not the case and can throw you off.

Another thing that is relatively unknown, is to sleep on your left side. By sleeping on you left side it is better for your stomach and will reduce acid reflux symptoms like heartburn. Also keeping your head elevated while you sleep will reduce heartburn. So adding an extra pillow can be a great benefit.

The process can also lead to a backflow of gastric juices to the pharynx or mouth.
